Personal Statement: I earned a Master’s degree in applied physics. My goal is to continue knowledge delivery by teaching and or tutoring students in physical science and mathematics at the high school and college and to become a full time educator at an institution of higher education. To reach that goal I have always rely on teaching students the concepts rather than plugging numbers into equations, the origin of which is obscured to the student. I believe that evaluating a student before starting a tutoring session is a must because this is a critical time for me to know the student’s standing in regard to the subject in which they need tutoring and determines the success or failure in improving the student’s knowledge. Once I know the student’s background, it is easier to decide whether to given a supplemental information needed in the subject to offset deficiency. Understanding the concepts in a subject is the corner stone of acquiring knowledge in that subject. I explain these concepts in simplest terms, and give examples so that the student can recall the concepts in each of the topics in the sessions. The second most important part in teaching that I practice is engaging my students in the learning process and so that they will become independent learners the further we explore deeper into the subject. If I see that a student is not participating, I employ different types of motivations ranging from free exploration of the subject and how it impacts everyone daily to what improvements are still needed in technology or other sciences that involves the subject. This is a very important aspect of intervention in any student’s academic life, especially those who are frustrated and seem to be on the verge of giving up and have no clear direction of where they are heading. I have taught at three state institutions of higher education. I have experience working with US and international students from a diverse background. I have always reviewed algebra and trigonometry as well as calculus with my students along the way when teaching physics. I have learned from graduate school how to write lecture notes and prepare solutions for quizzes and exams as well as writing lab reports for undergraduate students. These experiences have enable me to be a successful private tutor not just at explaining the concepts but writing it up for student’s review for preparation for exams. I have also learned to be a guidance counselor for high school students, helping them improve on some subjects and strengthening the direction of their chosen field of study.
Other Information : I also tutor pre-calculus, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
